The World Institute of Africa Culture and Traditions (WIACT) was founded in 2019 as an indigenous research, education, and community development institution committed to preserving, revitalizing, and promoting Africa’s diverse cultural heritage, indigenous knowledge systems, and traditional languages. Guided by the belief that cultural identity is fundamental to sustainable development, WIACT works to safeguard Africa’s intellectual, historical, and ecological legacy for present and future generations.
The Institute was inspired by the vision and lived experiences of its Founder, Rashid Iddrisu, whose migration journey to Europe exposed him to the complex social, economic, and cultural factors driving irregular migration among African youth. This experience reinforced his conviction that sustainable development must be rooted in indigenous knowledge, cultural identity, community empowerment, and local ownership. Upon returning to Ghana, he established WIACT to create a platform dedicated to preserving Africa’s rich cultural heritage while fostering inclusive and sustainable community development.
Since its establishment, WIACT has grown into a dynamic centre for interdisciplinary collaboration, bringing together researchers, traditional leaders, educators, students, policymakers, and local communities to document endangered indigenous knowledge systems, strengthen traditional governance institutions, conserve biodiversity, revitalize indigenous languages, and promote culturally grounded solutions to contemporary development challenges.
Today, WIACT serves as a bridge between traditional wisdom and modern scholarship, demonstrating that Africa’s indigenous philosophies, ecological knowledge, and cultural practices offer valuable insights and innovative solutions to global challenges, including climate change, biodiversity conservation, sustainable livelihoods, education, and community resilience.
